London for Families, Part II: We Can Fly!

WE CAN FLY! For the family that refuses to grow up, take part in a day full of Peter Pan. Come face to face with a crocodile at the London Zoo. Listen carefully just in case one of them is ticking!  JM Barrie donated the copyright of Peter Pan and all future royalties to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The hospital has repaid the man who invited Pan with tributes throughout the building including the Peter Pan Café, the statues of Peter and Tinkerbell outside the entrance. The hospital’s Museum has a collection of Peter Pan memorabilia from around the world which can be seen by appointment only. 

Next, head down the street and around the corner to the Duke of York Theatre where on December 27 1904 the first performance of Peter Pan was staged. Take the Tube to Lancaster Gate and stroll along Bayswater Road to number 100, this is the former residence of JM Barrie and where he wrote Peter Pan. Head across the street to Kensington Gardens where JM Barrie met the Llwelyn boys who inspired Peter Pan. Kensington Gardens hosts its own guided Peter Pan walk. Be on the lookout for the bronze statue of Peter Pan. It is also the home of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground which was inspired by the stories of Peter Pan, and includes a large wooden pirate ship.
