California is the cradle of the green movement and it’s only fitting that the first Ritz-Carlton to become LEED certified can be found in the alpine valley of Lake Tahoe. Without sacrificing an ounce of the luxury and creature comforts that define the Ritz-Carlton brand, this ski resort embraces the natural beauty of its surroundings. During the design phase, its footprint accounted for the old-growth trees, limiting the number that had to be cut. The stones that accent the magnificent central fireplace were locally sourced, as are many of the ingredients that comprise the excellent food at Chef Traci Des Jardin’s Manzanita restaurant.
In a city where green is at a premium, The Palazzo in Las Vegas is a shining example of what it means to be eco-friendly. It’s one of the largest hotels in the U.S. with LEED certification and boasts recycled building materials, a solar-heated pool, and an incentives program for guests with electric cars, to name just a few of their initiatives to protect the environment. There are many green and LEED certified hotels in New York City, but Crosby Street Hotel in Soho stands out as one with the most unique and creative initiatives. Take its rooftop garden, for instance: it produces seasonal produce like blueberries, melons, tomatoes, and herbs for the hotel’s restaurant. They even have egg-laying chickens. Their Meadow Suite overlooks a field of wildflowers, while the Crosby Bar Terrace features a real apple tree. It hopes to become one of the first NYC hotels to gain gold LEED status.
